2025 Monthly book project

At the beginning of 2025 I set myself the goal of making a new book or zine every month. The hope was that the goal would push me to be decisive in my work, try new things, not take every project too seriously, and to pull out projects that had long been on the back burner or on my list of ideas. Below is information on each book so far.

January | the southwestern interstate space atlas

This small black and white book was inspired by my love of space and my love of the southwest. It details six space history and space tourism related places I’ve been to and that you can also visit: NASA JPL, the Mount Wilson Observatory, the Lowell Observatory, the Cinder Lake Lunar Analogue, Meteor/Baringer Crater, and the Very Large Array (VLA).

february | six common slime molds

I had noticed slime molds growing here and there for a few years, but took more of an interest in learning to identify what I was seeing in the spring of 2024. As I researched to try and learn more I wasn’t necessarily finding all the info I wanted in one easy place, so I set out to create an easy beginners reference book on slime molds. You can learn more about this project on its individual page.

March | good night, nina!

For my March book I wanted to try a totally different style of illustration and a total different type of book: a children’s book. This riso-printed, two color (“orchid” and “melon”), bedtime story children’s book is inspired by my dog Nina. It follows Nina through her routine during the day and as she gets ready to go to bed. It features a hand stitched, two color binding and digitally drawn colored pencil style imagery. This book was a fun experiment in style, sequential art pacing, and writing for a specific audience.

May | Rock survey

With Rock Survey I set out to see how I could collect and creatively present information from a single rock. With this project I was able to experiment with how to collect information, shape it into a consistent and approachable format, and add some more creative elements to the presentation of the information, as well. I want to continue playing with the ways that information design and science communication can have more creative elements introduced into them, making them artful, playful, but still informative. You can learn more about this project on its individual page.

april | snowpiercer ACCORDION book

I started this accordion book inspired by the movie Snowpiercer back in 2016. I started to lay out the book within my first year of making books, and putting it together was a lot harder for me then and I never managed to finish it. It came to mind at one point in April and I decided to arrange the layout, print it, and assemble it. The satisfaction of finished a project that has sat in my “Ongoing” folder for so long made the project well worth completing.
